There’s Still Time to Help Shape Volusia's Coastal Future

Posted On: December 17, 2025

Volusia County is conducting a multi-year Coastal Feasibility Study to evaluate how we can reduce erosion, strengthen dunes, and protect coastal communities from future storms. The study is analyzing shoreline conditions along the entire coast and comparing a variety of potential protection strategies. At the same time, the study focuses on preserving public beach access and the coastal experience that residents and visitors value.

As part of the survey, you can review and select which shoreline protection options you prefer, including:

  • Beach nourishment to build up the protective sand buffer
  • Dune restoration and vegetation plantings
  • Submerged artificial reefs to break wave energy
  • Engineered structures like groins and breakwaters
  • Seawalls in areas where natural options may not be enough

There’s still time to share your priorities and select your preferred options in our short survey: www.surveymonkey.com/r/VolusiaCoastalSurvey2.

If you’d like more information about the study and detailed explanations of the various management options, they can be found at www.volusia.org/coastalstudy. Your input will help shape a countywide Beach Management Plan that guides future decisions, supports natural resources, and enhances coastal resilience for years to come.
