Discover Natural Volusia Through Free Outdoor Adventures
Posted On: January 23, 2026

Want to explore carnivorous plants, paddle pristine waterways, or discover nocturnal wildlife? Volusia County's Explore Volusia program offers residents and visitors the chance to experience the county's diverse natural habitats through free guided adventures led by environmental specialists.
As the educational arm of the Volusia Forever program, Explore Volusia provides opportunities to learn about local ecosystems while enjoying outdoor recreation on conservation lands. The program offers a variety of experiences, including paddling trips, eco-buggy tours, hiking excursions, and biking adventures across 39,000 acres of protected land.
"We want everyone to experience the incredible biodiversity right here in Volusia County," said Tommy Nordmann, Education Specialist for Explore Volusia. "Whether you're learning about the unique adaptations of carnivorous plants or participating in international citizen science efforts like the Great Backyard Bird Count, these programs connect people with nature in meaningful ways."
February's calendar features several exciting programs. On Feb. 4, participants can join eco-buggy tours at Longleaf Pine Preserve to discover some of Florida's 31 native species of carnivorous plants. Those interested in paddling can explore the St. Johns River during the Hickory Bluff Paddle on Feb. 10 or navigate the salt marsh habitat of Spruce Creek on Feb. 17. The county provides sit-on-top kayaks free of charge for those who need them.
Nature enthusiasts can contribute to science during the Great Backyard Bird Count hike on Feb. 13 at Scrub Oak Preserve, where specialists will demonstrate how to use smartphones to help identify birds during this international event. For a unique after-dark experience, the Eco-buggy at Night program on Feb. 23 explores nocturnal animals like owls and bats, followed by s'mores around a campfire at Deep Creek Preserve.
All programs are free and open to the public, though reservations are required. Most programs welcome participants ages 10 and up, while some eco-buggy tours are suitable for all ages. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
