Volunteers Make a Difference in Volusia County
Posted On: February 3, 2026
You see them at the Marine Science Center greeting visitors. You notice them keeping our beaches pristine through cleanup efforts. You might even encounter them at your local library or at one of the county's historic sites. They're the hundreds of volunteers who dedicate their time to making Volusia County an even better place to live – and you can join them.
Volusia County's Make a Difference Volunteer Program offers residents the opportunity to give back to their community in meaningful ways. Whether you're looking for personal fulfillment, social connection, skill development, or simply want to support a cause you're passionate about, volunteering offers rewards that extend far beyond the hours you contribute.
"Volunteering with the county is a wonderful way for residents to connect with their community in a hands-on, meaningful way," said Melissia Anderson, who oversees the volunteer program. "We're grateful for the dedication of our volunteers who help make Volusia County thrive."
Long-Term Opportunities
For those seeking ongoing involvement, the county offers recurring volunteer positions across multiple departments. These opportunities involve a formal application and background check process and include placements at:
- Animal Services
- Daytona Beach International Airport
- DeBary Hall Historic Site
- Emergency Management
- Information Technology
- Library Services
- Lyonia Environmental Center
- Marine Science Center
- Volusia Ready Response Corps
The impact is substantial. Last year, volunteers provided more than 45,000 hours of service. Many of the county's most popular programs, particularly the Marine Science Center, rely heavily on this dedicated volunteer support.
Single-Impact Events
If you prefer a shorter-term commitment, the county also offers one-time volunteer opportunities perfect for individuals or groups. These community events include:
- Jay Watch and Manatee Watch
- Monofilament Recovery and Recycling
- River, Beach, and Spring Cleanups
- Washback Watchers
- Adopt-a-Beach/Park/Trail/Road programs
- Botanical Gardens projects
These events are ideal for families, community groups, or anyone wanting to try volunteering without a long-term commitment.
Get Involved
Time is our most valuable and irreplaceable resource. When you volunteer with Volusia County, you're investing that precious commodity in your community's future.
