Fire Rescue Dedicates New Engine to Firefighter J.J. Curry

Volusia County Fire Rescue officially placed its new Engine 41 into service during a traditional push-in ceremony at the DeLeon Springs Fire Station on Feb. 27.

During the event, Engine 41 was dedicated in memory of the late Firefighter J.J. Curry, honoring his service and legacy to Volusia County Fire Rescue.

The ceremony marked the engine’s formal entry into service and continued a longstanding fire service tradition that marks the moment a new fire apparatus officially enters front-line service. During this ritual, firefighters, and often community members, ceremoniously push a new engine or ladder truck into the station's bay to signify its readiness to protect the community. The tradition dates back to the 1800s when fire departments relied on hand-drawn or horse-drawn equipment.

“This ceremony represents more than a new piece of equipment,” said Fire Chief Joe King. “It reflects our continued commitment to protecting this community and honoring those who have served before us. Dedicating Engine 41 in memory of Firefighter J.J. Curry ensures his legacy will continue to serve alongside us every day.”

Curry’s wife, son, and mother participated in the touching and well-attended ceremony.
