Opening Ceremony Features Two Traveling Memorial Walls
The Stand Down kicks off with a public opening ceremony at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 19, also at The Center at Deltona – and it will mark the Volusia County debut of two powerful traveling war memorial walls.
The ceremony will include a parade of service flags, laying of wreaths, an exchange of keys to the walls, and remarks from Volusia County Veterans Services Director Scott Olson and Deltona Vice Mayor Maritza Avila-Vazquez.
The Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall is a three-fifths scale replica of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C. Standing six feet tall at its center and spanning nearly 300 feet from end to end, it bears the names of more than 58,000 U.S. military personnel who died or remained missing during the Vietnam War.
The Global War on Terrorism Wall of Remembrance is a 120-foot, double-sided traveling memorial standing six feet tall. Its 32 to 36 panels list the names of more than 10,000 service members, civilians, and first responders killed from the 1983 Beirut bombing through the 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Both walls will remain on-site throughout the Veterans Stand Down on March 20 and 21, open to the public for reflection and remembrance.
