Volusia County Warns Vendors of Fraudulent Purchase Requests

Volusia County is alerting vendors and businesses to increased fraudulent activity involving individuals posing as County employees and attempting to make purchases or establish accounts using unauthorized email addresses.
In recent months, the County has identified multiple instances in which individuals have used email domains designed to appear affiliated with Volusia County government. The County's official email domain is @volusia.gov. Vendors should use caution when receiving purchasing requests from any other domain, particularly when the sender claims to represent Volusia County.

Volusia County has taken steps to report and shut down fraudulent domains when possible and continues to monitor suspicious activity.
The County urges vendors not to ship goods without first receiving and verifying a valid Volusia County purchase order. Upon receiving a purchase order, vendors should carefully review the contact name, telephone number, email address, billing address, and shipping address for accuracy and consistency.
Vendors should also exercise caution if someone attempts to establish a new account or submit a credit application on behalf of Volusia County. Any request that appears unusual or raises questions should be verified directly with the County before an account is opened, credit is extended, or goods are shipped.
Businesses with questions about the validity of a purchase order, account request, or credit application should contact Volusia County Purchasing and Contracts at 386-736-5972. Vendors also may independently contact a member of the Purchasing and Contracts staff using the contact information available at volusia.gov/purchasing.
Volusia County encourages businesses to verify questionable requests using independently obtained County contact information rather than telephone numbers, email addresses, or links contained in a suspicious message.
