With March being celebrated as Women’s History Month, the DeLand Regional Library is hosting a special program at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 25 highlighting one woman’s life in the U.S. Navy. A native of Stamford, New York, Janet Marnane will share her personal history of her career in the Navy and beyond.
After completing Naval Flight Officer training in 1983, Marnane served in an assortment of sea and shore-based assignments and flew a variety of tactical aircraft. After completing a master’s degree at the Naval War College, she was invited to join the faculty there. Marnane’s last duty station brought her to Daytona Beach, where she became the first executive officer of the newly formed Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC). Marnane still lives in Daytona Beach.
Since retiring from the military, Marnane has been an assistant professor at the College of Aviation and is currently the program coordinator for the college’s aeronautics degree. She’s also involved in testing a prototype on-demand hypoxia trainer for the Navy that’s designed to help pilots recognize and overcome the signs of oxygen deficiency.
The library is located at 130 E. Howry Ave. More information can be obtained by calling the library at 386-822-6430.
