County Council approves contract with County Attorney Mike Dyer

Posted On: June 16, 2020

Two weeks after the Volusia County Council was unanimous in its selection of Mike Dyer as county attorney, the council finalized the decision Tuesday by approving an employment contract with Dyer.

The contract establishes the terms and conditions of Dyer’s employment, setting his annual base salary at $207,000. The salary is below the combined average salary, $215,955, of county attorneys in 12 counties in the state that were surveyed. Jeff Mandel, the county’s outside labor employment attorney who negotiated the contract, said Dyer’s salary was “fair and reasonable.”

Dyer had been serving as interim county attorney since former County Attorney Dan Eckert resigned in January. He has a business administration degree from Boston University and a law degree from Florida State University. Dyer started in private practice before being hired by the county in November 2005 as an assistant county attorney. Dyer left county government in April 2012 to become general counsel for the Volusia County School District and remained in the position until returning to the County Attorney’s Office in January 2019. He has practiced law in Volusia County for 20 years.

“I want to thank you for your vote of confidence,” Dyer told council members immediately after the contract was approved. “It has been just a pleasure to work with you.”

The county attorney is one of two county employees directly hired by the County Council. The other is the county manager.
