Walking book club hits the trail

Posted On: September 10, 2020

Discuss “Florida Oranges: A Colorful History” by Erin Thursby during a walking book club at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, at DeBary Hall Historic Site, 198 Sunrise Blvd., DeBary.
Thursby’s book explores the history of the Sunshine State’s most famous crop from DeLand’s eccentric “citrus wizard” Lue Gim Gong and the rise and fall of smuggler Jesse Fish to the silver-tongued politician William J. Howey, who made his fortune selling plots of groveland through the 1920s. Staff and guests will discuss the book during a leisurely three-mile walk to Gemini Springs and back.
Adults are welcome, whether you have read the book or not. Reservations are required and limited to 10 walkers; contact Education Coordinator Lisa Perez at 386-668-3840 or lperez@volusia.org. Meet at the Visitor’s Center. Participants should bring bottled water and wear comfortable shoes and sunscreen.
