As 2020 comes to an end, Volusia County’s Public Works Department is celebrating new beginnings with the opening of the Northeast Public Works Services Facility west of Daytona Beach.
Employees joined the Volusia County Council in cutting the ribbon for the $11.7 million facility on Dec. 14 and expect to move into the building in January.
The facility, at the southeast corner of U.S. 92 and Colin Kelly Avenue, will serve as the headquarters for the Road and Bridge Division's northeast maintenance operations as well as the Traffic Engineering Division's services and signal maintenance operations.
“The facility will assist in staff’s purpose, which is to maintain the county's transportation system of roads and bridges, enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors,” said County Chair Ed Kelley
District 4 County Council representative Heather Post added, “This facility will serve as a piece to a more resilient, sustainable infrastructure and support post-emergency response within our county today and for generations to come.”
As a move from obsolete and flood-prone facilities of the past, this new facility offers greater optimization for services and a more centralized location to serve county residents. The facility was constructed to withstand hurricane force winds, allowing staff to remain at the location during extreme weather events.
The collaboration between county staff and Ajax construction led to the Northeast Services Facility being complete on budget and two and a half months ahead of schedule.
