Get back to nature at the LEC

Discover Volusia County’s native plants and wildlife during free outdoor hikes and indoor programs at Lyonia Environmental Center (LEC), 2150 Eustace Ave., Deltona.
Registration is required; call386-789-7207, ext. #21028. Walk-ins will not be permitted.
Staff will offer the following programs in February.
Virtual storytime: 10 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 6. Children ages 2 to 7 can enjoy a reading of “Snowy Valentine” and then follow along as an LEC volunteerguides them virtually through an activity. An adult must register and be present throughout the program. An online link and list of activity supplies will be provided upon registration.
Creature feature: 3 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16. Did you know alligators have been known to dig tunnels 65 feet long to protect themselves against extreme weather conditions? During this classroom presentation, an environmental specialist will share interesting facts about these resilient cold blooded reptilians. This program is limited to 10 persons to allow for social distancing.
“Diversity in nature” hike: 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 20. Learn about different plants and how their relationships with other species help provide a more sustainable ecosystem. Wear closed-toe shoes, bring water, and be prepared to hike on sugar-sand trails. This program is limited to 10 persons to allow for social distancing.
Critter crunch: 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27. Watch as LEC employees feed their marine animal ambassadors a delicious lunch of krill, seaweed and shrimp. Participants will learn which critters enjoy this meal, the unique methods they use to eat their meals, and the important roles they play in the ecosystem. This program is limited to 10 persons to allow for social distancing.

LEC staff has established public program procedures based on current guidelines. These procedures are subject to change based on guidance at the local, state and federal levels. Programs may be modified at any time as needed.
