Severe Weather Awareness Week slated for Feb. 1-5

When it comes to severe weather conditions, Florida just about has it all – everything from hurricanes, tornadoes and flooding to thunderstorms, lightning, extreme heat and dangerous tidal forces. How to stay safe during these extreme events will be the focus of Florida’s annual Severe Weather Awareness Week, which will be recognized around the state between Feb. 1-5.

“While we’re blessed with great weather here in Florida, there also are lots of extremes,” said Volusia County Public Protection Director Joe Pozzo. “Severe Weather Awareness Week is a great opportunity for our residents to learn how to protect themselves from the dangers of extreme weather. The best advice is to stay informed and stay prepared.”

The five-day event will be full of weather information and safety tips, with a different theme each day. Topics will include lightning, hurricanes and flooding, marine hazards and rip currents and thunderstorms and tornadoes.

“Much of the information will serve as reminders,” added Pozzo. “In Florida, it’s important that you and your family have a plan and know how to initiate it should the need arise. Disaster preparedness needs to be practiced year-round.”

Residents looking for local, real-time information regarding disaster preparedness can follow Volusia County Emergency Management on Facebook and Twitter and also can download the free Emergency Management app (https://www.volusia.org/services/public-protection/emergency-management/em-app.stml) available on both the Google Play and App Store.
