Make preparations now for the start of hurricane season

Posted On: May 10, 2021

With the June 1 start of the 2021 Atlantic Hurricane Season right around the corner, now is the perfect time for residents to make sure they’re ready in the event that a storm threatens Florida’s east coast. Volusia County Emergency Management will be putting out reminders all week through social media posts about things like developing an evacuation plan, stocking a disaster supply kit and steps that residents can take to strengthen their homes. It’s all part of National Hurricane Preparedness Week that runs through this Saturday, May 15.

“Being ready for any potential emergency situation is all about making advance preparations,” said Volusia County Public Protection Director Joe Pozzo. “The time to start planning is before the storm season gets here. The time to plan is now.”

Last year’s Atlantic storm season spawned 30 names storms, with 12 of the storms – including six hurricanes – making landfall in the United States. Today’s post on the Emergency Management Facebook page encourages residents to have a family evacuation plan, with multiple options on where to go and how to get there. Residents should have a go bag for needed supplies and a plan for their pets and seek shelter outside of the evacuation zone with a friend, relative or at a hotel. Local shelters should be considered a last resort.

Emergency Management officials also are encouraging residents to take precautions to ensure that their homes and property are storm ready. Before the start of hurricane season, trees should be trimmed and window coverings obtained. Ahead of storms, collect lawn furniture and other loose outdoor items, cover windows, secure doors and move vehicles to a safe location. Also, make sure gas tanks are full and you have extra cash on hand.
