Animal Services Director elected to statewide board

As if Adam Leath wasn’t busy enough serving as Volusia County animal services director, a courtesy assistant professor at the University of Florida’s College of Veterinary Medicine and a board member and treasurer of the National Animal Care & Control Association.

This week, Leath took on another role as a newly elected member of the Florida Animal Control Association (FACA) board of directors. A non-profit organization, FACA is dedicated to improving the methods and standards of the animal control and protection profession. FACA also works to promote justice and equity in enforcement of local and state laws and regulations.

The board of directors serves as the policy-makers for the association and advises state legislators on statute changes involving animal welfare.

“I’m extraordinarily honored to be serving on the board of directors for both a state and national organization devoted to the welfare of animals,” said Leath, who is a certified national animal cruelty investigator. “This will provide even greater awareness of innovative programs and best animal services practices being employed across the country. Anything that helps support our profession is good for both animals and people.”

Leath began his career in animal welfare in 2006 as an animal control officer for Lee County Domestic Animal Services in Fort Myers. He has been the Volusia County animal services director since January 2019 and also is a past president of the International Veterinary Forensic Sciences Association (IFVSA).

Leath was elected to a 3-year term representing Zone 5 on the FACA board of directors, which encompasses Volusia, Flagler, Putnam, Lake, Seminole and Orange counties.
