LEC plans nature programs

Discover Volusia County’s native plants and wildlife during free programs at Lyonia Environmental Center (LEC), 2150 Eustace Ave., Deltona.

Registration is required; call386-789-7207, ext. #21028.

Children ages 2 to 7 can enjoy a reading of “A House for Hermit Crab” during a Tiny Trekkers program from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, in the center’s classroom. Afterward, they can take a short, guided hike through Lyonia Preserve to experience the sights and sounds of the outdoors.

Staff will offer the following programs online and in the classroom. Those who choose to participate online will receive a link upon registration.

Building with the environment in mind: 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug.14. Green building practices reduce the impact we have on our environment by conserving our natural resources, and low-impact development manages stormwater onsite and incorporates nature into built environments to prevent flooding and remove pollution. Learn how these development practices work with nature to benefit people and wildlife.

Invasive alternatives: 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 21. Stacey Matrazzo, program manager for the Florida Wildflower Foundation, will go over some of the invasive plant species commonly used in home landscapes and explain which native plants can be used in their place.

Sea turtles of Volusia County: 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 27. Learn about the threatened and endangered sea turtle species that nest on Volusia County beaches and their connection to the ancient beach of Lyonia Preserve. Staff will discuss their anatomy, diet, the effects of beachfront lighting on their nesting habits, and how locals can become in involved in helping these marine reptiles. Participants will also hear about some Citizen Science projects such as the local Washback Watchers program.

Sharks, stewards of the sea: 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28. An important part of marine ecosystems, sharks help keep oceans healthy and clean. Learn about the significance of sharks and how humans can help protect these apex predators of the sea.

If you will be walking through Lyonia Preserve, wear closed toe shoes, bring water and be prepared to hike on unpaved sugar sand trails.
