DeBary Hall Historic Site is planning various events for February that feature helpful hints, history, activity and fun for all. Upcoming events include:
What’s in your backyard? Invasive species in Florida: 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3: It's an invasion from killer plants to anacondas! Learn about various invasive species, where they might be found, and what can be done about them during this free presentation with Master Naturalist Roger Fulton.
Story time at DeBary Hall: 9:30 a.m. Fridays, Feb. 4 and 18: Children are invited to Kids Corner, an outdoor story time. DeBary Kids Corner is a free program featuring various stories, songs and activities designed for preschoolers, but children of all ages are welcome.
A German guidebook to Volusia County trails: 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb.5: From St. Augustine to Palatka and Sanford to Orlando, Central Florida has a pleothora of multiuse trails. Join German snowbird Edith Kohlbach explains how she fell in love with Florida’s trails and wrote a guidebook about them. This presentation is part of the free Lemonade Lectures series sponsored by Volusia County. Light refreshments and lemonade will be served.
Wildlife bike tour along the Spring-to-Spring Trail: 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9: Take a free, guided biketour from DeBary Hall to Lake Monroe Park and back with Roger Fulton, master naturalist, outdoor writer, guide and the author of several regional trail guidebooks. Learn about local wildlife as you travel through various habitats where you might see gopher tortoises, red-shouldered hawks, ospreys and various other local critters. Participants must bring a bicycle and helmet. Sunscreen, snacks and bottled water are also recommended.
Living History Day: 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 12: History will come to life at the fourth annual Living History Day. The event will include historical re-enactors, mansion tours, activities for children and much more. A civil war era camp and a medical tent will also be displayed by the 37th Alabama Regiment Company H, a Civil War re-enactment group that will offer presentations on Civil War weapons, life and artifacts.
Get stepping with line dancing lessons: 5:30 p.m. Thursdays, Feb. 10 and 24: Line dancing is a great way to exercise your mind and body. Join DeBary Hall staff for a fun evening full of learning beginner line dances to various music genres. There is a $3 charge for each class.
Birds and animals of the River of Lakes Heritage Corridor: 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19: The River of Lakes Heritage Corridor contains a plethora of cultural and historical sites with an abundance of interesting wildlife and unique habitats. Join local author Marcia Meara as she highlights some of Florida's beautiful animals and birds in their natural settings during this free presentation.
