Port Orange library plans events for Women’s History Month

Women’s History Month will take center stage at the Port Orange Regional Library, 1005 City Center Circle, in March.

Special presentations include:

“Ophelia: Florida Suffragette”: 2 p.m. Friday, March 11. Actress Dianne Jacoby will portray a fictional Florida suffragette in a one-woman play titled “Ophelia, Florida Suffragette.” The historical drama focuses on a Florida girl who shares the events that led to her becoming a placard carrying suffragist in Washington, D.C. This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Port Orange Library.

Ida Lewis, Lime Rock Lighthouse keeper: 1 p.m. Thursday, March 17. Did you know the U.S. Lighthouse Service was the first federal agency to hire women in occupations other than clerical, custodial or educational? Jackie Mann, a docent with the Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse & Museum, will interpret the life of Lime Rock Lighthouse keeper Ida Lewis.

Functional fibromyalgia: 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 29. Kimberly Jenkins Boehm, a functional diagnostic nutritionist, will share information about natural approaches to restore function and health in those with fibromyalgia, which affects women twice as often as men. Boehm is a retired nurse and health director of the Functional Health Group in Hanover County, Virginia.
