 DeBary Hall plans April events

DeBary Hall Historic Site is planning various events for April that feature helpful hints, history, activity and fun for all. Upcoming events include:

Story time at DeBary Hall: 9:30 a.m. Fridays, April 1, 8 and 29: Children are invited to Kids Corner, a free, outdoor story time featuring stories, songs and activities. The program is designed for preschoolers, but children of all ages are welcome.

Honey! How? (part one): 1 p.m. Saturday, April 9: Discover how honeybees create honey with Donna Marlin as she discusses their history, biology and more. Marlin has been in the beekeeping business for over 15 years in New Smyrna Beach. Don’t miss part two of this sweet presentation at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 30.

Newest and safest multiuse trails in Central Florida: 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 13: Join Master Naturalist Roger Fulton as he talks about the Spring-to-Spring, paved biking and hiking trails that one day may connect all of the major Springs in Florida. A nine-mile guided bike ride from DeBary Hall to Lake Monroe and back will to DeBary Hall follow the presentation. Bring a bicycle and helmet, sunscreen, snacks and bottled water. Children over 12 are welcome if accompanied by an adult. Reservations are required.

Writing your memoirs for future generations: 4 p.m. Thursday, April 7: Join Roger Fulton, author of “A Common Man’s Uncommon Life,” as he provides helpful tips on how to research, gather complementary materials and write your life story. Fulton will also share options for getting your work published.

Get stepping with line dancing lessons: 5:30 p.m. Thursdays, April 7 and 28: Line dancing is a great way to exercise your mind and body. Join DeBary Hall staff for a fun evening full of learning beginner line dances to various music genres. There is a $3 charge for each class.

The science of light: 1 p.m. Saturday, April 16: Ponce Inlet Lighthouse docents Bill Henry, John Mann and Steven Oshinski will present an interactive program that focuses on the challenges encountered throughout history when attempting to use, harness and concentrate the energy and power of light. For sailors, the ability to see a lighthouse at a distance was a game-changer. Follow along as the lighthouse keepers explore the pitfalls and triumphs of light as a navigation aid and how it eventually led to the first modern optic, the Fresnel lens. This presentation is part of the free Lemonade Lectures series sponsored by Volusia County. Light refreshments and lemonade will be served.

Those squirrely guys: 1 p.m. Saturday, April 23: Join local author Marcia Meara as she discusses some of our most common backyard visitors and our rarest: squirrels! You might think you’ve seen enough birdfeeder raiders for one lifetime, but you’d be surprised at some of the lesser-known species of squirrel that call Central Florida home.

How sweet! A taste of honey (part two): 1 p.m. Saturday, April 30: Donna Marlin returns to cover more biology and plant qualities that contribute to honey, making it unique at different times of the year. Marlin will also provide several types of honey from different collections to taste.

All events will take place at DeBary Hall Historic Site, 198 Sunrise Blvd., Registration is requested for all programs; call 386-668-3840 or email lperez@volusia.org to sign up.
