DeLand library plans ocean-themed programs

The DeLand Regional Library, 130 E. Howry Ave., will host a variety of free programs that will focus on the theme “ocean of possibilities.”
DeLand war boats: 1 p.m. Monday, June 6. Did you know DeLand contributed tugboats to the World War II war effort? Dan Friend, president and military curator of the DeLand Memorial Hospital and Veterans Museum, will share the history of the U.S. Army's small tugboats built on Lake Beresford during World War II and the Korean War.
Sea turtle ecology and conservation: Noon Friday, June 17. Join marine scientist and educator Carolyn Kovacs to learn about the different species of sea turtles that nest and hatch on Volusia County’s beaches, discover firsthand the challenges sea turtles must overcome to reach adulthood, and learn what residents can do to make sure sea turtles continue to visit our beaches for years to come.
History of lighthouses: 1 p.m. Monday, June 20. John Mann, lead docent at the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse & Museum, will discuss the history of lighthouses with a special focus on the three lighthouses of Volusia County.
Introduction to Vikings: 1 p.m. Thursday, June 30. Discover the tremendous impact Vikings had on the history and culture of Western civilization in this entertaining presentation from James “Zach” Zacharias, senior curator of history at the Museum of Arts & Sciences. As traders, raiders, explorers and colonists, they ranged from eastern North America to the Asian steppe, from Dublin to Carolingians. Zacharias will also describe Viking war ships and how they dominated the seas for over 300 years.
