DeBary Hall Historic Site is planning various events for June and July that feature helpful hints, history, activities and fun for all. Upcoming events include:
Tea tasting: 11 a.m. Thursday, June 16. Enjoy sampling a variety of teas while your hostess dressed in Victorian clothing discusses the history of tea and Victorian social customs. Small desserts and finger sandwiches will be served. Guests will also take a virtual steamboat ride in our Imagidome Theater and tour the home. Guests are encouraged to wear their best summer tea outfits. Tickets are $20 each and must be purchased by June 10. Seating is limited to 20 guests.
Lemonade Lecture: Florida’s Felines: Bobcats and Florida panthers: 1 p.m. Saturday, June 18. Join Lauren Barth for a presentation on bobcats and Florida panthers. Barth, the wildlife assistance biologist of the Northeast Region for the FWC, will discuss these felines’ biology, behavior, and their role in Florida’s ecosystems. She will also answer questions about how to coexist with these remarkable animals, and address how to identify, prevent, and resolve potential human-wildlife conflicts. This presentation is part of the free Lemonade Lectures series sponsored by Volusia County. Light refreshments and lemonade will be served.
Bird talk: Wood storks and sandhill cranes: 1 p.m. Saturday, June 25. Join local author and wildlife enthusiast Marcia Meara to learn all about wood storks and sandhill cranes, two interesting wading birds. This presentation is filled with tons of information, gorgeous photographs, and many fun facts you will not want to miss.
Story time at DeBary Hall: 9:30 a.m. Fridays, July 1 and 15. Children are invited to Kids Corner, a free, outdoor story time featuring stories, songs and activities. The program is designed for preschoolers, but children of all ages are welcome.
Master Gardener: Butterfly gardening: 1 p.m. Thursday, July 7. Creating a butterfly garden can be as simple as choosing flowering plants that will invite butterflies to your garden to feed, but it does require some planning. Howard Jeffries, master gardener with the University of Florida/Volusia County Extension, will describe the various butterfly species in Central Florida and explain how to attract them to your yard. Take-home sheets with helpful gardening information will be provided.
Lemonade Lecture: De Leon Springs State Park: Its many layers of history: 1 p.m. Saturday, July 16. Take a trip with Brian Polk and follow the footsteps of the original Mayaca people, then travel to 1982 when De Leon Springs State Park opened. The spring has attracted and fascinated people for more than 6,000 years. It has been the area’s lifeblood—providing drinking water, a rich food source, access to waterways, a mill and electrical power, health and economic benefits, and recreation. This presentation is part of the free Lemonade Lectures series sponsored by Volusia County. Light refreshments and lemonade will be served.
All events will take place at DeBary Hall Historic Site, 198 Sunrise Blvd., DeBary. Registration is requested for all programs; call 386-668-3840 or email lperez@volusia.org to sign up.
