Port Orange library hosts Mermaid Week

Celebrate mermaids during the week of June 19 at the Port Orange Regional Library, 1005 City Center Circle. All ages can pick up a mermaid take-home craft, take their picture with a life-sized poster of Jason Momoa as Aquaman, and grab a coloring sheet or two.

Movies and programs include:

“Aquaman”:1 p.m. Sunday, June 19. Jason Momoa and Amber Heard star in this action-packed adventure that reveals the origin of the half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry. Ths 148-minute movie is rated PG-13.

“Mermaids: A Documentary”: 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 20. This 132-minute documentary, which is rated PG, takes a look into the urban legend of mermaids. The film blends real-life events and phenomena with the story of two scientists who testify they found the remains of a never-before-identified sea creature.

“The King’s Daughter”: 2 p.m. Monday, June 20. King Louis XIV's quest for immortality leads him to capture and steal a mermaid's life force, a move that is further complicated by his illegitimate daughter's discovery of the creature. This 90-minute fantasy is rated PG.

Mermaid bottle craft: 10 a.m. Thursday, June 23. Create and decorate mermaid-themed bottles. Supplies are limited and reservations are required; call 386-322-5152, option 4.

Protecting the Florida manatee: 2 p.m. Friday, June 24. Debbie Wright, Volusia County’s manatee protection program manager, will discuss the history and biology of Florida manatees and explain the threats these gentle giants face. Participants will get an up-close look at manatee bones and learn what various organizations are doing to preserve these marine mammals and their environment.
