DeBary Hall Historic Site is planning various events for September that feature helpful hints, history, activities and fun for all. Upcoming events include:
Story time at DeBary Hall: 9:30 a.m. Fridays, Sept. 2 and 16. Children are invited to Kids Corner, a free, outdoor story time featuring stories, songs and activities. The program is designed for preschoolers, but children of all ages are welcome.
Lemonade Lecture – A history of West Orange County: 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3. Jim Crescitelli, director of the Winter Garden Heritage, will present a captivating story that begins thousands of years ago and continues today with Winter Garden’s vibrant, restored Downtown Historic District. Indigenous people, settlers from the Deep South, and today’s exploding population have all lived along the south shore of Lake Apopka in a shared experience. The lecture will feature archived photographic images to show the history of the region. This presentation is part of the free Lemonade Lectures series sponsored by Volusia County. Light refreshments and lemonade will be served.
Get stepping with line dancing lessons: 5:30 p.m. Thursdays, Sept. 8 and 22. Line dancing is a great way to exercise your mind and body. Join DeBary Hall staff for a fun evening full of learning beginner line dances to various music genres. There is a $3 charge for each class.
Lemonade Lecture – Hands-on pruning: 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17. Join Master Gardener Howard Jeffries as he shares reasons and techniques for pruning a plant. Jeffries will break down pruning to its basics during this free hands-on presentation. Attendees are encouraged to bring gardening shears.
Historic bike tour: 9 a.m. Wednesday, Sept 21. Take a free, guided bike tour from DeBary Hall to Lake Monroe Park and back to DeBary Hall. The tour guide will explain the area’s history, from the Native Americans who inhabited the region thousands of years ago to the development of Gemini Springs Park and everything in between. The nine-mile ride will include several stops along the way. Participants must bring a bicycle and helmet. Sunscreen and bottled water are also recommended. Children over 12 are welcome if accompanied by an adult. Reservations are required.
Tea tasting: 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 23. Enjoy sampling a variety of teas while your hostess, dressed in Victorian clothing, discusses the history of tea and Victorian social customs. Small desserts and finger sandwiches will be served. Guests will also take a virtual steamboat ride in the Imagidome Theater and tour the home. Guests are encouraged to wear their best Victorian tea outfits. Tickets are $20 each and must be purchased by Sept. 16. Seating is limited to 20 guests. Tickets to the event are non-refundable once purchased.
