Health programs on tap at Port Orange library

The Port Orange Regional Library, 1005 City Center Circle, will host several activities and programs related to health and wellness during Health Happens in Libraries Month.
Get active in Volusia County: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4. A representative from Volusia County’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Division will discuss the various hiking, biking and paddling trails and other recreational activities available in Volusia County.
A natural approach to diabetes: 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6. Kimberly Jenkins Boehm, a functional diagnostic nutrition practitioner, will explain how sleep and stress affect blood sugar. She will also explain how diet, rest, exercise, stress reduction and supplementation can help maintain optimal blood sugar.
All about physical balance: 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 10. A representative from Thomas Physical Therapy will explain the importance of physical balance. Balance keeps you upright, allows you to walk without assistance and helps prevent injury.
Introduction to Alzheimer's disease: 2 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12. Learn about the differences between Alzheimer’s and dementia, stages, risk factors, research and FDA-approved treatments. The speaker will also discuss the common signs of the disease and the next steps to take, including talking to your doctor. Attendees will receive an official completion award and become an ALZ STAR.
Introduction to tai chi: 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14. Tai chi is a series of gentle exercises that create harmony between the mind and body. Follow along with instructor Bruce McKnight, who will focus on the pai lum system.
Council on Aging presentation: 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 17. Doreen Willett from the Council on Aging of Volusia County will provide an overview of services. The nonprofit organization is dedicated to providing services that enable seniors to maintain their independence and remain in their own homes
Flu shots from Walgreens: 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18. Walgreens will provide flu shots, which are free with most insurance providers. Bring your insurance information and pick up a “health fair in a bag” kit while supplies last.
