DeLand library celebrates Native American Heritage Month

Learn about the history of Native Americans in the Sunshine State with two free programs at the DeLand Regional Library, 130 E. Howry Ave.
- History and culture of the Taino: 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5. Joey Karei Kumaha'manigua will discuss the evidence pointing to Florida being part of a major pre-colonial trading route and indicating the direct connection of Florida to the Caribbean and Mesoamerica. Kumaha'manigua is involved in the Taino culture revival and is a member of the Yukayeke Jaguar of Bimini and the Taino Nation of Boriken.
- Timucua of Volusia County: 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 7. Felipe De Paula of the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse and Museum will discuss the Timucua, who lived in northeast and central Florida and southeast Georgia until the 18th century.
