Severe Weather Awareness Week is Feb. 6-10

Volusia County encourages residents to plan and prepare for disaster events by participating in Florida Severe Weather Awareness Week, Feb. 6-10. Each day will highlight a specific event providing education and tips to remain safe.

The topic of each day will be:

  • Monday: Lightning
  • Tuesday: Marine hazards and rip currents
  • Wednesday: Thunderstorms and tornadoes
  • Thursday: Hurricanes and flooding
  • Friday: Wildfires

Additionally, residents are encouraged to review their plan and conduct a tornado drill on Wednesday. Many local schools will be participating.

“When most people think of severe weather in Florida, they immediately think of hurricanes,” said Emergency Services Director Jim Judge. “However, there are more dangers out there, and residents need to be cognizant of their warning signs and how to remain safe during these events.”

To learn more about Florida Severe Weather Awareness Week, follow the Volusia County Emergency Management Division’s Facebook page. Staff will post information every day during the week to increase awareness.
