Council will continue exploring allowing dogs on the beach

Posted On: February 21, 2023

The Volusia County Council unanimously voted to explore a test area for allowing dogs on the county’s beaches.

To test the success of such a program, the council has narrowed the trial proximity to the Bicentennial Park area in Ormond-by-the-Sea.

While the test region has been identified, council members requested staff to present information and various options during the March 21 meeting regarding enforcement, potential user fees to bring dogs into the allowable zone and the length of the area where dogs may be allowed.

The public is invited to attend the March 21 meeting and provide comments. The meeting will begin at 4 p.m. Those who are unable to attend may submit comments in advance to publicparticipation@volusia.org. Comments received by 4 p.m. March 20 will be provided to the County Council and become part of the public record.

If the council can establish parameters and vote to pass a program design on March 21, the vote to officially change the ordinance will occur at a later meeting.
