Angela Miedema confirmed as animal services director

Volusia County’s new animal services director, Angela Miedema, brings with her 12 years of animal welfare experience and leadership, including oversight of multimillion dollar budgets and management of organizations with more than 80 employees.

Miedema, who was confirmed by the Volusia County Council on Aug. 1, comes to the county from Orange County Animal Services, where she has worked as an animal behaviorist since December 2021.

Before moving to Florida in 2021, Miedema served in several key roles in Michigan, including executive director for the Humane Animal Treatment Society in Mt. Pleasant, animal control officer for Kent County Animal Control, and animal care director for the Al-Van Humane Society in South Haven. She also worked as a mounted patrol officer for the Kent County Sheriff’s Office, where she was trained in equine care and management.

Miedema has a master’s degree in business administratrion from Florida Gulf Coast University and a bachelor’s degree in biology from Central Michigan University.

“I’m very excited to be joining the animal services team,” Miedema said. “Having worked with animals from a young age, I’m eager to bring my knowledge and leadership to serve the citizens of Volusia County. I really look forward to serving our citizens and their pets alongside the staff that build up this incredible department.”

Miedema’s first day on the job will be Aug. 21.

Volusia County’s Animal Services Division enforces the county’s ordinances and state statutes pertaining to animals, promotes responsible pet ownership, and provides low-cost spay and neuter services at its animal care clinic on Indian Lake Road, Daytona Beach.
