Volusia County Council Awards Funding to School District for Student Driver Education

Demonstrating a profound commitment to student well-being and road safety, the Volusia County Council has awarded $234,252 to enhance driver safety education in schools throughout the county. This move, funded by allocating $5 from each civil traffic fine, underscores the County's innovative and proactive approach to fostering safer driving practices among its youth.

The County has awarded $1,025,508 in these funds over the last five years to the Volusia County School District, a significant investment enabling the district to administer its driver education program to 2,255 students during this time.

The funding infusion from the County will enable the school district to continue administering driver education programs, offering them after school, on weekends, and during summer breaks. This flexibility in scheduling ensures that more students can benefit from the program at their convenience. The funds are earmarked for critical resources, including purchasing two new driver education vehicles, ongoing vehicle maintenance, fuel, compensating the school district staff, and procuring necessary curriculum-related materials. Notably, the program extends its reach beyond traditional settings, offering high school-aged students not enrolled in public schools the opportunity to participate in public school-hosted sessions.
