Volusia County Tire Amnesty Day - Say Goodbye to Mosquito Breeding Zones
Posted On: December 14, 2023
Join Volusia County Mosquito Control during its tire amnesty event this January, aimed at collecting old tires from residents, as standing water inside old tires often attracts mosquitoes to lay eggs. Residents can dispose of up to 20 tires per person during the event for free.
The event is from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 13, at the Volusia County Road and Bridge equipment staging site at the intersection of Blackburn Road and South County Road 3 in Pierson. The entrance will be marked with flags, and staff will be onsite to guide residents to a drive-thru drop-off route.
For other ways to combat mosquitoes, Volusia County Mosquito Control always advises residents to follow the “5 D’s” of mosquito prevention:
- Dusk – Avoid being outdoors when the sun is setting.
- Dawn – Sunrise is also a prime time for mosquito activity.
- Dress – Wear clothing that covers your skin.
- DEET – DEET remains the standard by which all other repellents are judged. Use DEET-based repellents with concentrations that match your activity and always follow the guidelines on the label.
- Drainage – Check around your home and “tip and toss” any standing water within containers, gutters, plastics, and plants.
