Volusia County Traffic Engineering Helps Safeguard the New Smyrna Beach Community One Traffic Light at a Time
Posted On: January 11, 2024
Thanks to the work of the Volusia County Traffic Engineering Division, a new traffic signal is now operating at the entrance of New Smyrna Beach High School. The stoplight aims to enhance the safety for student drivers and other motorists, as well as improve the traffic flow in the surrounding area. County staff collaborated with Volusia County Schools, New Smyrna Beach High School, the City of New Smyrna Beach, and the City of Edgewater to implement the signal, following a comprehensive traffic study conducted by Volusia County Traffic Engineering that concluded the signal would be beneficial.
“Volusia County Traffic Engineering operates with a safety first, efficiency second mindset,” said Director Jay Williams. “Our team was happy to assist with the project and help keep the students and staff at New Smyrna Beach High School safe, and the entire New Smyrna Beach community.”
The new light, located at 10th Street in front of the main entrance to the high school, will not only create a safer environment for drivers, but will also benefit students who walk to school. As a part of the project, a new pedestrian signal was installed, giving those on foot a signaled sign to cross safely.
