Volusia County’s 4-H youth livestock team is headed to the 2024 National 4-H Livestock Judging Contest to represent Florida, on November 19 at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky. After earning the state champion honors at the 2024 Florida 4-H State Livestock Judging Contest on April 13, the Volusia County team could not be more excited about this opportunity.
Livestock judging challenges youth to not only evaluate classes of market and breeding cattle, swine, sheep, and goats, but to also defend their placings through oral reasoning using decision-making, critical thinking, teamwork, and public speaking skills. This year's team, coached by Lori Smith, is made up of Hayley Luznar, Hayden Fowler, Garrett Hebert, and Luke Lunsford. At the state competition, the team placed first overall in the competition and the subdivisions for swine, sheep/goat, and oral reasons and third in the cattle division. Below are the individual results:
- Hayley Luznar placed first in sheep/goats and reasons, fifth in cattle, sixth in swine, and as the reserve high individual overall.
- Hayden Fowler placed fourth in sheep/goats, third in swine and reasons, tenth in cattle, and third individual overall.
- Garrett Hebert placed second in swine, fourth in reasons, eighth in cattle, and sixth individual overall.
- Luke Lunsford placed second in sheep/goats, tenth in swine, sixth in reasons, and ninth individual overall.
