Memorial Day Events across Volusia County
Posted On: May 23, 2024
Residents and visitors seeking to pay tribute to our fallen heroes this Memorial Day can choose from numerous commemorative ceremonies throughout Volusia County. With more than 70,000 veterans, Volusia County is a veteran-friendly county with a dedicated Veterans Services Division that helps veterans and their dependents file claims for compensation and benefits.
Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day when it was first celebrated in 1868. At the time, Americans were encouraged to decorate the graves of Civil War soldiers with flowers and wreaths. In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday.
The holiday is commemorated each year at Arlington National Cemetery, and there are plenty of ceremonies across Volusia County.
