My Safe Florida Home to Accept Applications July 1

The My Safe Florida Home program will begin accepting applications for wind mitigation inspections on July 1. The program provides up to $10,000 in matching grants to Florida homeowners for mitigation projects, including upgrades to roofs, garage doors, exterior doors, and windows to strengthen homes against hurricanes and potentially save homeowners money on their home insurance policy.

The state-funded program consists of two primary components:

  • Wind mitigation home inspections: All owners of site-built, single-family residential homes or townhouses may apply for an inspection. The inspection will identify those elements that could be improved to fortify the home against future wind damage. All inspections will be provided to eligible homeowners free of charge by the State of Florida. Applications will be reviewed and approved in the order in which they are received until current funding is exhausted.
  • Wind mitigation grants: For every $1 the homeowner provides, the state will provide $2 toward the actual cost of an authorized project up to $10,000.

Applications will be accepted and prioritized in 15-day increments.

  • Low-income homeowners ages 60-plus: July 1 to 15
  • Low-income homeowners of any age: July 16 to 30
  • Moderate-income homeowners ages 60-plus: July 31 to Aug. 14
  • Moderate-income homeowners of any age: Aug. 15 to 30
  • All other eligible Florida homeowners: Aug. 31

Low income is defined as 80% or less of the median household income of your county. Moderate income is defined as 120% or less of the median household income of your county.

When recommended by the wind mitigation inspection, grant money is available for these improvements:

  • Reinforce roof-to-wall connections.
  • Install secondary water resistance for the roof.
  • Upgrade roof covering.
  • Improve the strength of roof deck attachments.
  • Upgrades to windows, exterior doors, and garage doors.
  • Garage door upgrades.
  • Window upgrades.
