Shelters Open in Volusia County Jan. 21 to Provide Cold-Weather Relief

With colder weather expected Tuesday night, Jan. 21, Volusia County community organizations will open cold-weather shelters to assist residents without adequate heating or housing. Local organizations coordinate these shelters to provide warmth and safety for individuals in need.

The Bridge, operated by the Neighborhood Center at 421 S. Palmetto Ave. in DeLand, will welcome guests starting at 6:30 p.m. Guests may stay until approximately 8 a.m. the following morning, with breakfast provided before it closes. For more information about services at The Bridge, contact The Neighborhood Center at 386-734-8120, ext. 601.

Halifax Urban Ministries (HUM) is working with local churches on the county's east side to offer cold-weather shelter services. While HUM does not operate its own cold-weather shelter, it partners with multiple churches to ensure individuals have access to shelter. Those needing shelter or transportation to a shelter are encouraged to contact HUM at 386-317-5886 as soon as possible.

Volusia County and the community organizations will monitor weather conditions in the coming days and issue updates if cold-weather shelters are needed again this week.
