Volusia County Readies for Sand Dredging Project with USACE Pipeline Delivery

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is set to begin delivering and installing a temporary dredge pipeline starting on or near March 10 as part of a partnership with Volusia County and the Florida Inland Navigation District. This project will facilitate the dredging of approximately 900,000 cubic yards of sand from Ponce Inlet and the nearby Intracoastal Waterway navigation channels. The objective of this project is to maintain the navigation channels while using the dredged material to repair erosion damage from past storms.

To accommodate the pipeline installation, temporary adjustments to some beach access points will be necessary beginning on March 3. At this time, County contractors will begin modifications to the existing boardwalk near the control tower at Lighthouse Point Park in preparation for the arrival of the Army Corps contractor. Temporary pedestrian detour signage will be placed within the park to provide alternative points of access while work is underway.

Starting around March 10, the Beach Street vehicle access ramp in Ponce Inlet will be closed for approximately five days to provide a safe work environment for the initial installation of the dredge pipe. Additionally, during this period, pedestrian access from the park’s parking lot will be redirected to a nearby walkway. The jetty deck will also remain closed until further repairs are completed.

To maintain safety at the construction site, the public is urged to follow all signage and closures. This will help prevent accidents and ensure the efficiency of the ongoing improvements.
