New Watering Schedule Takes Effect March 9

With the arrival of Daylight Saving Time on Sunday, March 9, Volusia County residents and businesses will need to adjust their irrigation schedules to comply with seasonal watering restrictions set forth by the County and the St. Johns River Water Management District. The rules apply to all residents and businesses, including those within city limits, and are designed to help conserve water.

Irrigation remains prohibited between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily. However, beginning March 9, the following schedule will be in effect:

  • Homes with odd-numbered addresses may water on Wednesdays and Saturdays before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m.
  • Homes with even-numbered addresses may water on Thursdays and Sundays before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m.
  • Businesses may irrigate on Tuesdays and Fridays before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m.

Watering is limited to one hour per irrigation day, with a maximum of three-quarters of an inch per zone. These restrictions apply to all water sources except for reclaimed water, including private wells, surface water, and water from public and private utilities. Residents using reclaimed water should check with their provider for any specific guidelines.

There are some exceptions to the regulations. Newly planted landscaping may be watered at any time for the first 30 days, then every other day for the next 30 days. Store receipts should be kept during the first 60 days as proof of purchase. Hand watering is permitted anytime, but hoses must have an automatic shutoff nozzle. Additionally, chemical watering is allowed within 24 hours of application but may not exceed a quarter inch of water.

All automatic irrigation systems must be equipped with working rain-sensing devices or soil-moisture sensors, regardless of when they were installed. Agricultural irrigation is exempt as long as it follows the St. Johns River Water Management District’s agricultural water conservation requirements.

Volusia County enforces watering regulations only in unincorporated areas. Residents or businesses in unincorporated areas who need a variance may email codecompliance@volusia.org or call 386-736-5927 for more information.
