UF/IFAS Extension Announces April’s Programs

The UF/IFAS Extension Volusia County offers a variety of community programs to educate residents about economic and community development, leadership, family issues, agriculture, and the environment. In-person classes will be held at the Volusia County Agriculture Center, 3100 E. New York Ave., DeLand. Here’s what’s on April’s agenda.
Starting a 4-H Club Workshop: 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 8. Adults, teachers, and parents can get information about how to start a 4-H club, timelines, logistics, and fun 4-H projects to do with their club. RSVP at https://VolunteerVolusia4-H.eventbrite.com.
Coffee with a Gardener: 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, April 11. Join Volusia County’s master gardeners for a Q-and-A session. Coffee and tea will be served, and residents can ask questions about gardening and plant identification. Reservations are not required.
First-time Homebuyer Class: 5 to 9 p.m. April 17 and 24. Extension Agent Lisa Hamilton will instruct the two-part, online class, which consists of eight hours of education. Participants will receive a certificate of completion that will enable them to apply for a federal down payment and closing cost assistance program available through Volusia County, Seminole County, and the City of Deltona. Produce Safety Alliance Grower Training: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 22. This event will cover worker health, hygiene, and training; soil amendments, wildlife, domesticated animals, and land use; and agricultural water. Completion will satisfy the produce safety rule for the Food Safety Modernization Act. The $40 fee includes training materials, lunch, refreshments, and a certificate of attendance from the Association of Food and Drug Officials. Florida Master Naturalist Program: April 23 and 25 and May 1, 8 and 9. Environmental enthusiasts can become Florida marine habitat restoration naturalists by taking this 24-hour course, which is sponsored by the UF/IFAS Extension and Marine Discovery Center. Instructors will cover artificial reefs and the ecology and restoration of seagrass, coral, and sponge habitats. Activities will include snorkeling on a coral reef and participating in sponge restoration. The class will meet virtually and in person for field trips to New Smyrna Beach and the Florida Keys.
