County Expands Conservation Land Efforts with 1,299-Acre Acquisition Through Volusia Forever

Late last week, Volusia County completed the acquisition of the 1,299-acre River Bend Ranch Reserve, permanently protecting a significant stretch of wetlands, uplands, and pasture along the St. Johns River through the voter-approved Volusia Forever program.

Situated along one of Florida's most important natural waterways, the property plays an important role in the surrounding ecosystem. Its wetlands and floodplain help store floodwater and filter runoff, while its mix of natural areas provides habitat for wading birds, waterfowl, and other wildlife. The acquisition preserves those natural functions while protecting the property from future development.

“For the last 15 years, Quality of Life Surveys administered by the Resource Stewardship Division have consistently shown water access among residents’ top recreational priorities,” said Community Services Director Dr. Bradley Burbaugh. “With over 2 miles of frontage along the St. Johns River and another 1.3 miles along Deep Creek, River Bend Ranch Reserve creates exciting possibilities for future recreation while also strengthening flood protection and advancing the community’s commitment to environmental stewardship.”

River Bend Ranch Reserve also fills an important piece of the Florida Wildlife Corridor where it extends through Volusia County. By adding to an existing network of protected lands along the St. Johns River, the acquisition helps maintain connected habitat that allows wildlife to move across the landscape.

With the addition of River Bend Ranch Reserve, Volusia County's conservation efforts have now helped protect more than 65,000 acres since 1986, preserving natural areas that contribute to water quality, wildlife habitat and the character of the county's landscape.

Volusia County voters reauthorized the Volusia Forever program in 2020 with more than 75% support. Funded through a dedicated property tax, the program allows the County to acquire environmentally sensitive lands and conservation easements from willing sellers to protect water resources, wildlife habitat and other significant natural areas.
