From Arrival to Adoption: How the Volusia County Animal Shelter Prepares Pets for New Homes

When prospective adopters meet the dogs and cats available at the Volusia County Animal Shelter, they see healthy, happy animals waiting to find their forever homes. What many don't see is the extensive care, medical treatment, and behavioral evaluation that takes place before an animal is ever made available for adoption. When a stray animal arrives at the shelter, staff first scan it for a microchip, check for other forms of identification, and work to locate its owner. Once an animal becomes eligible for adoption, staff conduct a health assessment and develop a care plan to address any medical needs. That care often includes vaccinations, parasite prevention or treatment, spay or neuter surgery, microchipping, and any additional veterinary treatment before the animal is ready for adoption.

Through feeding, exercise, enrichment activities, handling, and routine interactions, staff observe how animals respond to people, unfamiliar situations, and daily shelter life. Rather than relying on a single evaluation, those observations continue throughout an animal's stay, helping staff better understand each animal's temperament, energy level, confidence, and individual needs.

Animals may also participate in carefully managed introductions with other animals to help staff better understand their social behaviors. While no shelter can predict how every animal will respond in every future environment, these careful behavioral evaluations allow Animal Services to share meaningful information with prospective adopters and discuss the types of homes where each pet is most likely to succeed.

Staff spend time talking with prospective adopters about their households, lifestyles, previous pet ownership, and other animals already living in the home. Those conversations allow Animal Services to provide guidance about each pet's personality, energy level, and individual needs so adopters can make informed decisions about which animal may be the best fit for their home.
