Daytona Dog Beach Inc. Presents $9,000 Donation for Volusia County Shelter Animals, Announces Expansion in 2027

The Hang 8 Dog Surfing Extravaganza made waves during its Volusia County debut in May, and the event’s impact continued today as Daytona Dog Beach Inc. President Nanette McKeel Petrella presented a $9,000 check to Volusia County Animal Services during the Volusia County Council meeting and announced an expanded two-day return in 2027.
The donation will directly benefit animals at the Volusia County Animal Shelter, helping support the care and services they receive while awaiting permanent homes. From their arrival at the shelter through the day they leave with a new family, the contribution will further help Animal Services provide the resources and support needed to care for animals throughout their stay.
“What started as a great day of dogs, surfing, and community fun is now making a tangible difference for animals at the Volusia County Animal Shelter,” said Volusia County Animal Services Director Angela Miedema. “We’re grateful for this donation and to everyone who helped make the first Hang 8 event in Volusia County such a success. We couldn’t have asked for a better first year, and we’re already looking forward to seeing everyone back on the beach in 2027.”
Daytona Dog Beach Inc. also presented the County with a $1,752 donation to support supplies for Volusia County’s dog-friendly beach areas, continuing its partnership with the County in support of dog-friendly beach access.
Building on the success of its Volusia County debut, which drew hundreds of dogs, their owners, and spectators for a day of surfing and beachside fun, the Hang 8 Dog Surfing Extravaganza will return next year with an expanded two-day event. Festivities are scheduled for Sunday, May 30, and Monday, May 31, at the beachfront behind the Hard Rock Hotel Daytona Beach. Organizers plan to build on the inaugural event by expanding the surfing competition, entertainment, and visitor experience as they work to grow Hang 8 into a destination event for Volusia County. Additional details will be announced in the coming months.
