Lifesaving Teamwork Earns Volusia County First Responders Special Recognition by AdventHealth

Four Volusia County first responders received special recognition from AdventHealth DeLand this afternoon for their roles in a remarkable cardiac arrest save that helped give a patient a second chance at life. AdventHealth recognized Volusia County Fire Rescue’s Justin Thomas and Russell Scanlon and Volusia County EMS’ Kianni Torres and Jacob Morgan for their actions and teamwork during the emergency response.

Volusia County Fire Rescue and EMS responded to a local store for a report of an unresponsive patron and found the patient in cardiac arrest. What followed was a coordinated resuscitation: personnel from both agencies performed CPR, managed the airway, and delivered advanced cardiac life support together, restoring the patient's pulse on scene.

EMS transported him to AdventHealth DeLand while continuing advanced medical care en route. His condition improved significantly along the way, as he began breathing on his own and no longer required a breathing tube. By the time he arrived at the Emergency Department, the patient was awake, opening his eyes and following commands. The AdventHealth DeLand team continued assessing and caring for the patient following his arrival at the hospital.

The successful save highlights the difference a quick response, skilled care, and teamwork can make during a life-threatening emergency. From the first crews on scene through transport and continued hospital care, each step helped give the patient the best possible chance of survival.
