Volusia County Animal Services Helps Neglected Dog Recover as Investigation Leads to Owner’s Arrest

A dog found severely underweight, sick, and covered in sores is now safe and on the road to recovery at the Volusia County Animal Shelter, while the person accused of neglecting him is behind bars following the work of Volusia County Animal Services in collaboration with the Volusia Sheriff's Office.

What started as a routine call to pick up a stray dog quickly became more than that. When the Volusia County Animal Control Officer (ACO) arrived, the seriousness of Tanner's condition was immediately apparent. His body was covered in sores and infection, and he was weak, sick, and in desperate need of help.

As the ACO assessed Tanner, a man approached and identified himself as the dog's owner. When questioned about the dog's poor health, the man acknowledged he could not adequately care for him and relinquished ownership to Animal Services. Tanner was immediately transported to the Volusia County Animal Shelter, where veterinary and shelter staff began providing emergency medical treatment, nutrition, and the support needed to stabilize him.

While Tanner received emergency care at the shelter, the ACO continued documenting his physical state and investigating the circumstances surrounding his care. Animal Services also began working closely with the Volusia Sheriff's Office on the case that ultimately led to an arrest.

"No dog should ever have to reach the state Tanner was in when he came to us," said Animal Services Director Angela Miedema. "But despite how sick he was, Tanner still wants nothing more than to be close to people and feel their affection. Now he has an entire team surrounding him with the care and compassion he needs. This is what our team does — we investigate, we intervene, and we advocate for animals that cannot advocate for themselves."

Tanner still has a long road to recovery, but he will not travel it alone. Animal Services will continue providing the support he needs as he regains his health and strength — and, with it, the opportunity for a much brighter future. Tanner is expected to make a full recovery and, when the time is right, will be available for adoption and the chance to find a loving home.
