Volusia County Lifeguards to Host Halloween-Themed Rip Current Simulator Event
Posted On: October 13, 2026
Volusia County Beach Safety and Daytona State College are teaming up to bring ocean safety education and Halloween fun together during a special community event that will give children and families an opportunity to experience rip current conditions and develop valuable water safety skills.
The event will take place at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Daytona State College Aquatic Center, where participants will experience the County's rip current simulator under the guidance of Beach Safety lifeguards. The training is offered at no charge and will include Halloween treats, with attendees encouraged to wear costumes over their swimsuits.
The hands-on activity allows participants to better understand the force and movement of rip currents while learning practical techniques for remaining calm and responding safely in the water. By experiencing the simulator firsthand, attendees can gain valuable knowledge that traditional classroom instruction alone cannot provide.
Volusia County Beach Safety introduced the simulator earlier this year as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen ocean safety education and increase public awareness of rip currents. The equipment allows lifeguards to demonstrate the effects of these powerful currents in a controlled setting, helping residents and visitors better prepare for conditions they may encounter at the beach.
