Cold Front to Bring Windy Conditions and Rough Surf This Weekend
Posted On: October 16, 2026
With strong winds, rough surf, and dangerous rip currents in the forecast, Volusia County is encouraging residents and visitors to stay alert to changing weather conditions and take precautions throughout the weekend, particularly along the coastline.
According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, a cold front moving through the region will bring increasingly windy weather beginning Saturday, Oct. 17, with gusts potentially reaching 40 to 45 mph. The strongest winds are expected along the barrier islands and during the afternoon, while breaking waves could reach 8 to 12 feet, creating dangerous conditions for swimmers and boaters alike.
In anticipation of the rough surf, Volusia County plans to remove trash receptacles and portable restrooms from the beach to prevent the equipment from being damaged or washed away. Elevated tides may also affect beach driving access, with temporary closures of vehicular beach ramps possible depending on conditions. Beachgoers should exercise caution, stay aware of changing surf conditions, and follow guidance from County lifeguards.
The approaching weather also coincides with Biketoberfest, when thousands of motorcyclists are visiting the area. With breezy weather in the forecast, riders are encouraged to be mindful of occasional wind gusts, particularly when crossing bridges or traveling along exposed roadways, and adjust their riding accordingly.
Although wind and surf will be the most noticeable weather impacts, the forecast also includes the possibility of scattered showers and thunderstorms. The heaviest rainfall is currently expected to remain south of Volusia County, although occasional periods of rain are possible.
The cold front's effects could linger into early next week, with rough surf and gusty winds continuing along the coastline. Sustained winds along the barrier islands could reach 25 to 30 mph Monday, with breezy weather extending into Tuesday. Beachgoers and boaters are encouraged to remain aware of the lingering hazards during this period.
Residents and visitors can stay informed about current beach and ocean conditions through the Volusia Beaches app, which provides real-time information about beach conditions and the status of vehicular beach ramps. The Volusia Emergency Management app also provides severe weather alerts, important notifications and other resources to help the community stay informed and prepared.
