FEMA Introduces Online Services for Flood Insurance Quotes and Purchases
Posted On: October 21, 2026
Yesterday, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) introduced a new online service that makes it easier for homeowners and other property owners to obtain flood insurance. For the first time, individuals can receive quotes and purchase National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) policies entirely online, providing a more convenient way to protect their property from the financial impacts of flooding.
The new service eliminates the need to work through an insurance agent to complete a purchase, although that option remains available. Residents can now get a quote and buy a policy online in minutes, making it easier to explore coverage options and protect their property.
To get started, residents provide basic information about their building to receive a quote. They can then choose to purchase a policy online or work with an insurance agent. Those who prefer assistance can share their quote with an agent of their choice or use the platform to find contact information for licensed insurance agents in Florida.
One common misconception is that standard homeowners insurance automatically covers flood damage. In most cases, it does not. While homeowners insurance typically covers certain types of water damage originating inside the home, such as a malfunctioning dishwasher or burst pipe, damage caused by rising externally generated water generally requires a separate flood insurance policy.
Residents should also keep in mind that most flood insurance policies have a 30-day waiting period before coverage takes effect. Waiting until a tropical storm or hurricane approaches to buy a policy could leave property owners unprotected. Securing coverage ahead of time can help ensure it is in place when severe weather strikes.
FEMA's new online purchasing option is available nationwide to individuals living in communities that participate in the NFIP. The program currently covers 4.4 million policyholders nationwide.
