Volusia County Residents Along the St. Johns River Can Access Sandbags in Lake County
Posted On: October 27, 2026
Volusia County residents in the Astor area along the St. Johns River can access a self-service sandbag distribution site in neighboring Lake County as elevated river levels continue to affect portions of the area. The site provides bags and sand, but residents must bring their own shovels and fill the bags themselves.
The distribution site is located at Lake County Fire Rescue Station 10, 23023 State Road 40 in Astor. Residents are encouraged to use this resource as needed while river levels remain elevated.
The St. Johns River in Astor is currently at moderate flood stage. Although elevated water levels have affected parts of the surrounding area, Volusia County has received no reports of water entering homes along the river. Volusia County continues to monitor conditions along the St. Johns River and encourages residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas to stay informed about changing river conditions.
Residents should avoid driving through water-covered roadways, obey posted signs and barricades, and keep children and pets away from areas with standing water. Even relatively shallow floodwater can pose hazards to motorists and pedestrians, and driving through standing water can push water toward nearby homes and properties.
Volusia County worked with Lake County to extend access to the sandbag distribution site to residents on both sides of the St. Johns River. The County appreciates Lake County's willingness to share this resource and will continue working with neighboring jurisdictions to support residents as river conditions evolve.
