Costumes, Candy, and Caution: Volusia County EMS Shares Halloween Safety Tips

With Halloween approaching, Volusia County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is encouraging parents and caregivers to take a few simple precautions to help keep children safe as they head out for an evening of trick-or-treating.

While the holiday brings excitement for children and families, dark costumes, reduced visibility, and increased pedestrian activity can create hazards, particularly as daylight fades. One of the most important precautions is ensuring trick-or-treaters can see their surroundings and remain visible to motorists. Dark-colored costumes can make pedestrians difficult to spot, while certain masks can restrict peripheral vision and make it harder to recognize approaching vehicles and other hazards.

To help families prepare for trick-or-treating, Volusia County EMS recommends the following precautions:

  • Be seen: Add reflective materials to costumes and treat bags, and carry flashlights or glow sticks to help motorists spot trick-or-treaters after dark.
  • See clearly: Make sure masks do not obstruct children's vision, particularly their ability to see approaching vehicles, bicycles, and other potential hazards.
  • Dress safely: Make sure costumes and footwear fit properly, and secure any loose or dragging fabric to help prevent trips and falls.
  • Cross carefully: Use sidewalks and designated crossings whenever possible. Look both ways before crossing streets, and never assume a driver sees you.
  • Stick together: Young children should always be accompanied by a responsible adult while trick-or-treating.

Motorists also play an important role in keeping Halloween safe. EMS encourages drivers to reduce speed in residential neighborhoods, stay alert for children who may unexpectedly enter the roadway, and use extra caution near intersections, driveways, and parked vehicles.

Halloween should be a night filled with costumes, candy, and lasting memories. By keeping safety in mind, families and motorists can help ensure the evening brings plenty of treats without any unexpected scares.
