Fire Rescue will bring holiday spirit to Halifax Health

Posted On: December 14, 2022

Santa and his elves will make an early appearance at a local hospital, but they’re opting for a less traditional entrance, ditching the reindeer and sleigh for climbing harnesses and rappel ropes.

At 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, members of Volusia County Fire Rescue’s technical team will rappel from the roof of Halifax Health’s Fountain Tower at 303 N. Clyde Morris Blvd. in Daytona Beach. The event serves as a training exercise for the team, but also offers an opportunity to bring a bit of joy to patients and staff, including children in Halifax Health’s Speediatric Unit.

“It’s hard to be in the hospital during the holidays, but for little ones it’s especially tough,” said Tanya Wolfe, pediatric nurse manager. “Events like this give patients and their families a moment to take their minds off what’s going on and bring some joy to their day. We’re so grateful that Volusia County Fire and Rescue thought of Halifax Health for their rappel for the third year in a row.”

“Throughout the year our technical rescue team trains in many locations to ensure our members stay proficient, and they always look forward to this very special event,” said Interim Fire Chief Joe King. “This will be our third year partnering with Halifax Health to provide our members with a place to rappel, as well as the opportunity to place a smile on the faces of patients, family and staff. Where else do you get to see Santa, Mrs. Claus and their elves rappelling off the side of a building to spread holiday cheer?”

And while the event provides a unique training opportunity, it also allows Volusia County Fire Rescue to provide a little extra joy during a trying year.
