Beach mice

The historic range of the southeastern beach mouse (Peromyscus polionotus niveiventris) has been significantly reduced by habitat loss, but Smyrna Dunes Park in New Smyrna Beach is home to one of the few remaining populations.

This small, nocturnal mammal inhabits sea oat dominated sand dunes where they build small burrows for nesting, food storage and refuge.

The major threats to beach mice are habitat loss and fragmentation due to human development, which are intensified by threats from hurricanes and predation by domestic cats.
