Volusia County to Complete Hurricane Milton Debris Collection on Dec. 21

Volusia County will conclude Hurricane Milton debris collection operations on Saturday, Dec. 21. Since operations began on Oct. 18, County crews and contractors have collected over 347,000 cubic yards of debris along 1,100 miles of county-maintained roads and 500 miles of private roads.

The County’s debris hotline will also close on Dec. 21. Residents on County-maintained roads and private roads in unincorporated areas seeking to follow up on a previous debris removal request after this date should contact Volusia County Public Works Administration at 386-736-5965. Representatives are available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.

Unincorporated Volusia County residents must resume following standard garbage and yard waste collection guidelines beginning Sunday, Dec. 22. Guidelines include:

• Garbage pickup includes the blue 95-gallon cart and up to two additional 32-gallon containers.
• Yard waste pickup is limited to 4 cubic yards per week. Limbs must not exceed 4 feet in length or 1 foot in diameter. Small debris such as rakings, pinecones, and Spanish moss must be placed in plastic bags or 32-gallon garbage containers.
• Whole trees cut or blown down are not included in yard debris services.
• “Bulky” item collection is limited to four pieces per week and includes furniture, mattresses, appliances, carpet, boxes of miscellaneous items, tires (with or without rims), swing sets, water heaters, and equipment. Bulky items will be collected on the scheduled garbage collection day.
• Carpet must be cut, rolled, and tied or taped into bundles no larger than 4 feet by 8 feet and weighing no more than 60 pounds.
• Construction and demolition debris, including aluminum siding, tile, screening, and drywall, is not part of normal residential waste collection. Homeowners are responsible for disposing of these items.
